Ford Mustang GT and SVT Cobra (1994-1995) MPH

The one attribute that has seen the Ford Mustang through the last few decades—the thing that allowed a buyer to overlook an aged platform, indifferent build quality, and a certain whiff of cheesiness—was its power-to-dollar ratio. That’s especially true of the third- and fourth-generation 5.0-liter Mustang GTs, 1982-95. With rear drive, a V-8, a manual transmission, and ample opportunities for hotrodding, these are some of the best performance-car bargains on the market.

We’ll concentrate here on the early fourth generation 1994-95 GT and SVT Cobra, because those two years marked the final expression of the easily modifiable 5.0-liter pushrod V-8 (which was always a 4.9-liter, but who’s counting). After 1995, Ford put the overhead cam 4.6-liter modular V-8 into the Mustang, making it a whole different animal and a lot harder to rod.

So not only do the 1994-95 GT and Cobra represent a lot of bang for the buck, they’re great fun to drive, virtually bulletproof, fairly simple to work on, and there are loads of street-legal performance goodies available.

1968 Mustang Prostreet Ford Muscle

“If you’ve been a fan of Mustangs for any length of time then you probably react to a set of Shelby stripes like bees do to honey.

Well that is exactly the reaction we had when we saw a white on blue striped car parked in the garage of a typical suburban California neighborhood. Thinking it probably was a well-kept Shelby GT-350, we made a u-turn to check it out further. We couldn’t have been more wrong!

Turns out what we stumbled upon was Dennis Shaw’s ‘68 ProStreet coupe, a work-in-progress. Dennis explained that when the car is finished that it will be the only coupe in the ProStreet class. He wanted to build something that hadn’t been done before; meaning he didn’t want to build another fastback.

Having long retired from the racing circuit, Dennis still enjoys building fast and incredible looking cars. This particular project started a year and a half ago, and he expects to have it finished sometime in late 1999. We thought we’d at least give you a preview, and then run a follow-up when the car is completed.”

Only Superformance ‘Sebring Tribute’ Coupe to Race Across Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction Block

An ultra-rare, one-only Superformance “Sebring Tribute” Coupe car will be sold at No Reserve during the fourth annual Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Collector Car Event. Built by Superformance under license by Carroll Shelby as a modern evolution of the 1964 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe, the car is one of the highest performance supercars ever built. The fourth annual event will include three days of No Reserve auction excitement from Thursday, March 30 through Saturday, April 1; SPEED will broadcast coverage of the event again this year.

“Peter Brock designed the six original Cobra Daytona Coupes for Carroll Shelby and helped America win its first sports car racing world championship,” said Craig Jackson, president and CEO of the Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. “This car is a tribute to the Coupe’s first victory, which began America’s golden age of international sports car racing. As the only Daytona Coupe replica personally endorsed by Shelby, it qualifies to be registered in the Shelby American Automobile Registry.”

The 1964 Sebring race was a watershed point in international GT racing. The Shelby team’s new prototype Daytona Cobra Coupe won the first of a long string of victories that would eventually lead to America’s first World’s Championship of Makes in 1965. The controversial-looking coupe penned by Peter Brock had caused a considerable stir at Daytona just a few weeks earlier when it led all the works Ferraris for several hours before being sidelined in a massive pit fire. The innovative design turned sports car racing on its ear and the victory at Sebring convinced Ford to back Shelby in his racing endeavors against Ferrari, effectively putting the dominant Italian company out of endurance racing.

The six original Daytona Coupes are now in private collections all over the world. As some of the rarest American racing cars ever produced, Daytona prices have continued to escalate over the years while desire for ownership has never diminished.

Forty years after the first coupe was constructed in Shelby’s racing shop in Venice, California, Jimmy Price, president of Superformance Automotive, and Brock teamed to recreate and update the car for limited production. The result, after years of careful development, was a series of just 100 lovingly crafted replicas that include every modern convenience that the originals lacked.

“I wanted to build the car that Shelby never had the chance to produce,” said Brock. “The Superformance Coupe is that car, bridging the racing world and the street. It is faster, more comfortable, better finished and more fuel-efficient than the originals, but retains the brutal essence that made those six racecars so much fun to drive. Built in the same spirit as the legendary GT’s of the 1960s, you can literally drive it to the track, compete, and then drive home.”

As the last of the first-generation Superformance Shelby Daytona Coupes, the car pays ultimate tribute to the car that inspired its form and performance. It has a state-of-the-art 427ci/560hp fuel-injected, Roush-built Ford V8 and five-speed Tremec TKO 600 transmission. Recent independent road tests of a similar Superformance Coupe proved that it is faster and handles better than the Ford GT, Dodge Viper GTS coupe, Ferrari 430, Aston-Martin DB9 or new Z06 Corvette.

“This particular coupe is the final production number of the series inspired by CSX 2287, the first of the six original coupes built in Shelby’s California racing shop,” added Jackson. “And with only one Sebring Tribute model ever produced, it will remain one of America’s rarest supercars. Peter Brock will attend the auction in Palm Beach to personally hand the keys to this Coupe to the winning bidder.”

Gainesville: Round three preview

For more than 35 years, NHRA teams have been addicted to the high-performance recipe that exists at Gainesville Raceway in early March. With low humidity, cool temperatures, some cloud cover, and a near sea-level altitude, the legendary track where Kenny Bernstein roared to the first 300 mph quarter-mile run offers all crew chiefs the desired formula for tuning 7,000 horsepower race cars to record-setting performances.

Certainly one of NHRA’s major tradition-filled events, teams will be working hard to achieve maximum performance and race victories at the 37th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals at historic Gainesville Raceway, March 16-19. The event, which will be televised on ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD, is the third of 23 races in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Series. Doug Kalitta, Whit Bazemore, Jason Line and Steve Johnson are the defending winners of the $1.8 million race.

Ron Capps, the current POWERade Series points leader in Funny Car, says his Brut Dodge, which is tuned by four-time Gatornationals winner Ed “The Ace” McCulloch, will be happy to claim a national record performance, as long as it is on the way to the Winner’s Circle.

Ford Mustand Hypertech Power Module

Hypertech Power Module

Many Ford computers do not contain a replaceable engine tuning chip. That is why Hypertech engineers designed the Power Module for Ford cars and trucks.

The Power Modules aluminum housing contains a dyno-tuned Power Chip that is mounted on a circuit board that easily plugs into the Ford computer’s service port. The Power Module electronically disconnects the stock chip and replaces it with the Power Tuning information stored in the Hypertech Power Chip.

The Power Module delivers the same performance benefits as other Hypertech Power Tuning products. Spark timing and fuel delivery are optimized for your engine, point-by-point, over the entire RPM range at full throttle. This produces the most powerful horsepower and torque curves possible. Ford Power Modules deliver more horsepower, higher torque, faster acceleration, and improved throttle response.

Three brawny muscle cars make comeback

Three brawny muscle cars make comeback
For me, the highlight of this year’s Twin Cities auto show is the return of Detroit’s “pony cars.”
We first saw Ford’s “retro” Mustang at last year’s show, and it instantly flashes me back to Steve McQueen buckling the seat belt in his Mustang as he starts the chase with the black Charger in “Bullitt.” This year, it’s even hotter. Wait ’til you see the reincarnation of the Shelby GT500. This special Mustang is sitting atop a rotating turntable, but the instantly identifiable “snake” — the tall Cobra emblem on each front fender and the grill — and the distinctive blue stripes on the white paint complete the time capsule back to the ’60s. The production version of this 450-horsepower supercharged 5.4-liter Mustang is scheduled to reach dealerships this year.

Vortech’s centrifugal supercharger kits feature lightweight aluminum impellers that are heat-treated and high-speed balanced to ensure smooth operation. Most kits include a matched compressor supercharger unit with SQ technology for “Super Quiet” operation.

A high-flow air intake system with a reusable air filter, heat-resistant silicone hose couplings, and premium grade flex hose are included as well. Also included are flow-tested cast aluminum and/or urethane air discharge tubing, a compressor bypass valve, OEM-style heat-treated cast 356 aluminum mounting brackets, a supercharger drive pulley, integrated belt tensioner, premium drive belt, stainless steel clamps, and heavy-duty mounting hardware. Kits are available in both satin and polished finishes and come with a step-by-step fully illustrated installation manual.
